Summer in the vineyard 2011 to 2012...

Summer is a time of great activity in the vineyard. Leaves are added at a surprising rate, tiny bunches of fruit swell and begin to take on the first hints of colour at veraison.

If we are lucky enough to have summer rain there will be a flurry of activity with the mower as we try to reduce competition from weeds and grasses. If not, the pump will run almost every day to provide some moisture to the vines.

In the winery, we prepare for bottling, retrieve barrels from the cellar, nose and taste and appraise their contents.

And always there is the frisson of anticipation, vintage is once again approaching.

Craiglee Shiraz 2007

Craiglee Shiraz has a drink-now personality that belies its proven ageworthiness. The '07 version of this Sunbury red starts light and fragrant, yet it has presence. Red fruits, currants, dark berries and whispers of aromatic herbs meet the nose. The middleweight palate has lovely refinement and purity of flavour, with balanced soft tannins underneath. Improves with breathing (13.5 per cent alcohol, Diam cork) Drink over eight years.
