Autumn in the vineyard 2010...

Autumn is a particularly busy time in the vineyard. We see the fruit develop colour and flavour, as we keep a watchful eye to the weather. A little rain will help to fill the grapes, and provide welcome growth to ground cover.

Our loyal team of local pickers comes together in good humour each vintage to chat as they pick, and to share a cup of tea at the end of the row.

Green-gold chardonnay grapes will be the first to come into the winery, luscious with echoes of summer fruits, followed by the rich ruby shiraz, spicy and fragrant, and the autumnal blackberry flavours of the cabernet.

And as the grape harvest draws to a close and the vines begin to enter dormancy, we welcome new life to the vineyard. The vines drop their brightly coloured leaves and the ewes produce the first lambs of the season in the shelter of the rows.

2006 Craiglee Vineyard Chardonnay Sunbury Victoria

Bright yellow. Ripe pear, melon and passion fruit on the nose, complicated by notes of smoky lees, marzipan and dried flowers. Round, fleshy and gently sweet, with a tangy lemon rind adding verve to the broad, palate-caressing orchard fruit flavors. Finishes with impressive clarity and clinging melon and honey notes. This is complex enough to enjoy now but has the balance to age. 92pts

2006 Craiglee Vineyard Shiraz Sunbury Victoria

Deep ruby. Youthfully assertive aromas of black raspberry, cherry, black pepper and smoky Indian spices, along with a subtle olive undertone. Smooth, fleshy and sweet, with vibrant dark berry flavors, velvety tannins and mounting spiciness. Finishes with outstanding clarity and grip, the spicy notes repeating. This is far removed from the stereotype of Australian shiraz, and its track record for cellarworthiness is solid. 92pts
